Notes from Planning Meeting

Here are my notes from last week's meeting.

We decided to meet twice a month at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Troy as we did last year for group activities. That will often be vocational classes the first hour and science using a specific curriculum the second hour from 9:00 - 11:30 AM on Thursdays. Other Thursdays we'll have special group activites like field trips or book reports, etc. See the calendar for the specific dates.

Vocational Classes are what we're calling our gender-specific classes.
  • School-aged Girls: Co-ordinated by Beth Coppage. The girls will learn a variety of skills such as tatting (making lace - a rare skill), crocheting, etc. Supplies needed will be posted in time for parents to purchase them for the class when they'll be needed.
  • School-aged Boys: Co-ordinated by Kara Stephens. The boys will learn a variety of skills which may include tying various useful types of knots, making a battery, etc. Supplies needed will be posted in time for parents to purchase/ gather them before the class when they'll be needed.
  • Preschool Children will attend "Book Club" : Co-ordinated by Carlene Sessions during this same time as the other boys/ girls classes during which they'll be read a story and do a related activity. Any supplies needed will be posted in time for parents to purchase/ gather them before the class for which they're needed.

Science Hours are based on the Apologia Curriculum by Jeannie Fulbright entitled Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day: Zoology Vol.2. These are experiments/ activities/ hands-on stuff that we plan to do together based on the curriculum. They are being co-ordinated by Janet Cordle. Contact Janet Cordle for more information about the curriculum.

During this second hour, preschool children will play in the gym.

Obviously, to make these exciting things happen, we need the participation of all moms so check your calendars now to see what dates you'd like to be in charge of specific activities. If you need ideas for what to do, check with the coordinator of the area you're interested in serving in. The science activities will be planned in advance and an itinerary will soon be posted by the coordinator ahead but a mom will need to be in charge of each one.

If any of this is unclear or you have questions or corrections, feel free to contact me at drhamlin@bellsouth.net

Looking forward to getting together,

Melanie Hamlin
